Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has confirmed that defender Josh Acheampong is unavailable for the upcoming Premier League match against Sunderland due to a minor fitness issue. The 20-year-old, who has established himself as a regular contributor this season, will miss the trip to the Stadium of Light but is expected to return after the international break.

Acheampong has made 11 appearances across all competitions for Chelsea under Alonso’s tenure. Capable of operating in both central defense and at right-back, the England Under-21 international was a notable omission from the matchday squad announced for Sunday’s fixture. He is not included on the bench for the away game.

Alonso described the situation as a matter of timing rather than a significant health crisis. "He’s recovering from a minor thing so he missed the fitness to be ready for today but we’re expecting hell be back after the international," Alonso said. The manager added that the absence was unfortunate given Acheampong's recent form. "It’s a pity because he was in a good moment."

In Acheampong’s absence, Alonso has selected a defensive line comprising Marco Palestra, Wesley Fofana, Levi Colwill, and Pep Chavarria. The midfield trio consists of Jordan Henderson, Moises Caicedo, and Romeo Lavia, supporting an attacking front three of Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers, and Pedro Neto.

The selection changes also impact other young players. Estevao has been dropped from the bench despite starting and performing well in Chelsea’s 2-0 victory over Manchester United in the previous match. Additionally, 19-year-old forward Joao Pedro, who is currently sidelined with an injury, had hoped to retain a spot in the starting lineup but will not be involved against Sunderland.

Goalkeeper Mike Penders remains in net for the fixture. Emiliano Martinez is pushing for a return from injury but will not make the squad. Alonso indicated that the Argentine goalkeeper should be available after the international break.

Alonso has previously praised Acheampong’s development, noting last month that the defender has "taken a step forward" in his maturity and aggression. He highlighted Acheampong’s potential to compete in the Premier League, stating, "He is on that journey as he has great potential and great qualities. He has played and he will play again."

Chelsea enter the Sunderland fixture fourth in the Premier League table, despite losing three of their first nine matches this season. In contrast, Sunderland sit at the bottom of the standings with only five points, meaning even a victory would not remove them from the relegation zone.
